Otoplasty Overview
Ear surgery, known as otoplasty, is done to improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It is commonly done on children between the ages of four and 14, but can also be done for adults.
There are a number of reasons people have ear surgery. These include:
- Protruding ears, to create proportion to the face
- Large ears
- Fix misshapen ears from an injury
- Lop ears, the tip seems to fold down and forward
- Cupped ear, a very small ear
- Shell ear, the curve in the outer rim and natural folds and creases are missing
- Large or stretched earlobes
- Torn earlobes
Ear Pinning Candidates
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything so that you can feel confident about your ear pinning surgery in the Twin Cities. We will develop a personal plan customized to your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
Your surgeon will meet with you to discuss the process including:
- Surgery technique
- Recovery
Surgery technique
There are different techniques used for ear pinning surgery. Your surgeon will determine the best technique for your individual situation. There will be a faint scar on the back of the ear which is often hidden. Surgery is generally done on both ears, even if only one ear appears to stick out. This will create a better balance and appearance.
Recovery
It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions for the best recovery. Bandages must stay on for the specified length of time for the best molding and healing. The procedure is generally well tolerated by both adults and children. Pain can be managed with over-the-counter medication. You should avoid any activity that could possibly bend the ear for at least one month following surgery like sleeping directly on the ears. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to ensure the recovery process is going well.
