Liposuction
We want you to feel good about your appearance. Our surgeons will work to give you the results you’re looking for.
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is a procedure in which localized deposits of fat are removed to recontour one or more areas of the body. A narrow tube or cannula is inserted through a tiny incision and is used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. Common areas for women to have liposuction include under the chin, on their hips, thighs and stomach and in the under arm and breast area. Men commonly have liposuction under the chin, around the waist and to reduce enlarged male breasts. This procedure is not a replacement for a proper diet and exercise, but can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.
Some common reasons for liposuction include:
- To remove unwanted fat from specific areas
- To complement the results of other plastic surgery procedures
- To create a more proportioned body
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
Your surgeon will meet with you to discuss how liposuction will work best based on your goals. The discussion will cover:
- Best results
- Techniques
- Limitations
Best results
Liposuction will produce the best results for normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. Good physical health is also important as medical problems increase the risk with liposuction. Older patients may have less skin elasticity, and so the results will not be the same as a younger patient with tighter skin. Your surgeon will discuss the best body-contouring option for you, which may be a different procedure than liposuction. Liposuction is also commonly performed with other plastic surgery.

Techniques
There are different liposuction techniques that can be used. Some liposuction techniques involve injecting various amounts of fluid into the sight, other techniques break up the fat before it is removed or use ultrasound. Your surgeon will recommend the best technique for you based on effectiveness, safety, cost and how the technique fits best with your needs.
Limitations
There are limitations to what liposuction can do. Afterwards your skin surface may be irregular, asymmetric or even baggy, especially in older patients with less elastic skin. Based on your skin quality and the amount of fat cells planned to be removed, liposuction will not smooth the skin, such as the appearance of cellulite. There is the possibility of numbness and pigmentation changes. Your surgeon will discuss any limitations so that you have a complete understanding before deciding.
Each liposuction procedure is based on an individual’s body and goals. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to answer any questions you may have and provide our recommendation on what we think is best for your situation. You will be well taken care of at HealthPartners Plastic Surgery. We are confident you will be pleased with the results.
