Burn Reconstruction
Healing from burns can be emotional for you and your family. Be assured, that we will make you as comfortable as possible. Our goal is to help you heal.
Reconstructive burn surgery is generally done after the initial burn wounds have healed. Although, some situations require earlier surgery. Surgery is done to improve both the function of the affected area and the appearance of the burn scars. Scar tissue treatments may require a length of time to see results.
Burn reconstruction is done for many reasons. Some of them include:
- Improve function of the affected area
- Make scars less noticeable
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
We want to make sure you understand what will take place and will explain:
- Type of procedures, both surgical and non-surgical
- Follow-up treatment
Type of procedure
Your surgeon will recommend the best procedure for your needs. Many times a burn scar contracture is performed to improve the normal motion of the neck, shoulder, hands or legs. When this scar is opened to improve function, the skin must be repaired. Procedures could include skin grafts, skin rearrangement and skin flaps depending on the location of the scar and the desired outcome. Non-surgical treatments for scars include cortisone injections and laser therapy.
Follow-up treatment
Follow-up treatment and therapy are important to promote healing and obtain the best possible function and physical appearance. Your surgeon will discuss a personalized follow-up plan based on your individual needs. Keep in mind that your follow-up may be short-term or last for an extended length of time.
Each burn reconstruction surgery is based on an individual’s body and goals. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to answer any questions you may have and provide our recommendation on what we think is best for your situation. You will be well taken care of at HealthPartners Plastic Surgery. We are confident you will be pleased with the results.
