What Is Abdominoplasty?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominal contouring or abdominoplasty, is done to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall and remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. This can change the appearance of a protruding abdomen but will leave a permanent scar.

You should wait to have a tummy tuck if you plan to be pregnant again. Vertical muscles in the abdomen are tightened during a tummy tuck and they will separate again during pregnancy.
Scarring After Abdominoplasty
The scar from a tummy tuck will be permanent but will follow natural lines and fade with time. Depending on the extent of your tummy tuck, the scar could go from hip to hip. Scars could be unusually prominent if you have scarring from previous abdominal surgery.
Location of fat deposits
The location of your fat deposits is important to determine the type of procedure that is best for you. If fat deposits are below your navel, a mini-tummy tuck or partial abdominoplasty may work for you. This procedure is less complex than a full tummy tuck. If fat deposits are also located on your hips, liposuction alone or in conjunction with a tummy tuck may offer the best body contour.
Skin tone or elasticity
A tummy tuck will not change the elasticity of your skin. Tissue that has lost its elasticity may tend to re-stretch slightly even after being made tighter with a tummy tuck.
Abdominoplasty Recovery
Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are to be expected following abdominoplasty. Discomfort and pain can be managed with medication. You will need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks of your recovery to help manage to swell and provide support. Most patients need to take about two weeks off of work to properly recover.
