A breast lift, known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Excess breast skin is removed and then tightened. It is sometimes done in conjunction with breast implants or a breast reduction.
It is a personal decision to have plastic surgery. Common reasons to have a breast lift include:
- Loss of breast firmness due to pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Sagging of breasts due to aging, gravity or weight loss
- To realign the nipples and areolas and/or reduce the size of the areolas
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
We want you to be happy with your results. To ensure this, your surgeon will explain:
- Shape and positioning
- Scarring
- Results
Shape and positioning
Your surgeon will discuss with you breast size and shape. He/she will take into consideration your wishes and explain his/her recommendations. If you have smaller breasts, implants may be recommended to restore both shape and size. With larger breasts, a breast reduction may be done with a lift to reduce size and give a more proportionate look. The positioning of the nipple and areola will also be discussed.
Scarring
Scars from mastopexy are permanent, although there are many techniques available to minimize them. With smaller breast lifts, the incision may be around the areola. More commonly though, an anchor incision is used which goes around the areola, a vertical incision from the areola to the breast crease, and then along the breast crease. The scars may remain lumpy and red for months. After time the scars will become less obvious and fade and will be covered by your bra or bathing suit.
Results
The length of time a breast lift lasts will vary depending on your individual circumstances. No surgery can permanently delay the effects of aging and gravity. The results of a breast lift may not last as long in heavy breasts as with smaller breasts.
