Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose. It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. It can be done to decrease or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip.
There are different reasons to have nose surgery. Some common reasons include:
- To enhance your appearance
- To correct a birth defect or injury
- To relieve breathing problems
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
We work toward your personal goals to find the best solution for you. With nose surgery we will discuss:
- Appearance of your nose
- Breathing concerns

Appearance of your nose
Nose surgery can dramatically change your appearance. We understand the physical and emotional aspects of this. We will walk you through everything so that you can feel comfortable in your decision. Your surgeon will listen to how you want your nose to look and will evaluate the structure of your nose and face. He/she will explain the results you can expect based on things such as the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin and your age. We want you to be pleased with your new appearance.
Surgery to change the internal nasal passages, or functional nasal surgery, is commonly done to improve airway function. This can be done separately or in combination with cosmetic surgery on your nose. There are different procedures to open air passages, each based on individual need. These procedures could include straightening of the septum (nasal septoplasty), reducing enlarged turbinates (bones that extend the length of the internal nasal cavity) or nasal polyp removal. Options to correct breathing difficulties will be discussed based on your particular situation.
Most surgery is performed from inside the nose and there will not be scarring on your face. There may be slight scars at the base of your nose if an open technique is used based on the surgery or if you are having narrowing of flared nostrils. It is possible that small burst blood vessels may appear as tiny red spots on the surface of your skin. These spots are usually very minor, but they may be permanent. We perform your surgery so that the least amount of scarring is visible.
Nose surgery is a very complex procedure. Because of this, about one in ten people require a second procedure for the best results. This corrective surgery is usually minor and would be done once healing from the initial surgery is complete. We want to be sure your final appearance is what you want. Your surgeon will discuss this with you if it is needed.
Each nose surgery is based on an individual’s body and goals. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to answer any questions you may have and provide our recommendation on what we think is best for your situation. You will be well taken care of at HealthPartners Plastic Surgery. We are confident you will be pleased with the results.
