Considering Brachioplasty? Here’s What to Know
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove loose skin and excess fat deposits in the upper arm. At HealthPartners Plastic Surgery, our team is dedicated to providing our patients with the outstanding surgical care they deserve. We strive to offer the best upper arm lift results the Twin Cities have to offer.
Benefits of an Upper Arm Lift
As people age, the upper arm skin can become loose and sag. Family history and large weight loss also affect the upper arm area. The results from arm lift surgery should be relatively permanent provided you maintain a stable weight and general fitness.
Common reasons to have an upper arm lift include:
- Eliminate saggy skin
- Remove excess fat
- Sculpt arms following large weight loss
- To provide a more toned and proportionate appearance
Preparing for Your Upper Arm Lift Surgery
Plastic surgery is a very personal decision. We want to help you meet your personal goals and look as good as you feel. We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
Some points your surgeon will want to discuss with you include:
- Extent of procedure
- Scarring
Scope of the Procedure
Your surgeon will recommend what procedure(s) he/she feels will best meet your needs. This may include liposuction alone to remove excess fat in the upper arm, an arm lift alone to remove excess skin, or a combination of the two. Issues such as the amount of skin looseness and/or fatty tissue of the upper arms and area around the armpits will all play a factor.
Recovery Process After an Upper Arm Lift
An arm lift is an outpatient procedure and you should be able to return home the same day as your procedure. There will be some bruising and swelling around the upper arms. These issues will subside over the course of your recovery. Any pain or discomfort you may experience can be managed with medication. Our team will also provide you with post-surgical instructions. On average, patients need around two to three weeks to recover.
Scarring
The extent of your scar will depend on the amount of fat and skin being removed. For a lesser amount of fat and skin removal, the incision and scar may be limited to the upper arm near the armpit. For a larger amount of removal, the incision and scar may extend along the back or side of the arm from the elbow to the armpit. Your surgeon will explain the procedure based on your condition and the extent of your scar. Scars are permanent but may fade some with time.
