Chin surgery, or genioplasty, is done to reposition or reshape the chin. This can be done by repositioning the bone supporting the chin or using chin implants. Sometimes chin surgery is done in conjunction with nose surgery. This is done to achieve facial proportion as the size of the chin may affect the perceived size of the nose.
There are different reasons to have chin surgery. Some common reasons include:
- To correct a receding chin, chin misalignment or protruding chin
- To improve and enhance facial contours creating a more defined facial profile
- To create a more balanced look to your face and features
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
Your surgeon will discuss the options available to meet your needs. The discussion will focus on:
- Chin surgery or chin implant
- Incision location
- Combining with nose surgery
Chin surgery or chin implant
Your individual needs will determine whether chin surgery or a chin implant is recommended.
Chin surgery, or genioplasty, is used if it is best to move the chin bone forward. A horizontal cut is made through your chin bone and the lower portion is shifted forward. A chin implant, known as mentoplasty, may be used when a modest amount of chin augmentation is needed for contour. The implant is placed in a small pocket over the front of the jawbone.
Incision location
When having chin surgery, the incision is made inside the mouth leaving no visible scar. With a chin implant, the incision is either inside the mouth (along the lower lip) or on the underside of the chin. An incision on the underside of the chin is made in the chin crease and is hardly noticeable. Your surgeon will explain the difference between the two types of incisions and recommend the best one based on your individual needs.
Combining with nose surgery
The size of your chin may increase or decrease the perceived size of your nose. For example, a recessive chin can make a large nose appear bigger. A chin implant will help to achieve facial balance, which will give the appearance of a smaller nose. Nose surgery combined with a chin implant will provide results beyond what either procedure can do alone.

How Much Does Chin Surgery Cost?
The total cost of a chin surgery is determined based on factors like your medical examinations, surgeon’s fee, hospital charges, post-surgery garments, and anesthesia. The exact techniques used will also impact cost, as will the total time needed to perform the surgery.
