Breast Reduction Surgery
We want you to be comfortable with your body and to help you relieve any physical discomfort due to large breasts.
Breast reduction for females, also known as reduction mammaplasty, removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. This makes them smaller, lighter, and firmer. The reduction can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The result is breasts that are more in proportion to the rest of your body.
Breast reduction is usually done for specific reasons including:
- To relieve back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts
- To avoid skin irritation or painful shoulder indentations from bra straps due to large breasts
- To create a more proportionate breast size to body size
- To increase physical activity that was limited due to the size and weight of the breasts
- To feel self-confident with more proportionately sized breasts
We want you to be informed before making your choices. Our caring team will take the time to listen to your needs and fully explain everything. We will develop a personal plan customized for your needs. You can feel confident in our excellent care.
Your surgeon will ask about your expectations and will fully explain:
- Scarring
- Breastfeeding
- Size and shape
- Surgical expectations if you use tobacco products
- Additional considerations
Scarring
Breast reduction will leave permanent scars. Most commonly your scar will be an anchor-shaped incision that goes around the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. The scar will become less noticeable over time and will be covered by your bathing suit or bra. If you are a smoker, it may cause poor healing and wider scars.
Breastfeeding
We don’t recommend breast reduction surgery if you plan to breastfeed. Because the surgery removes many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples, future breastfeeding may not be possible.
Size and shape
Your surgeon will discuss with you your desired size and shape for your breasts and the positioning of the nipple and areola. The nipple and areola will be moved higher and should be approximately even with the crease beneath your breasts. We want to make sure your expectations are met in regards to the size and shape of your breasts.
Additional considerations
Sometimes, reduction mammoplasty can leave a permanent loss of feeling in the nipples or breasts. You may also have slightly mismatched breasts or unevenly positioned nipples. A breast reduction is sometimes performed with a breast lift and/or liposuction. Your surgeon will discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
Each breast reduction surgery is based on an individual’s body and goals. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to answer any questions you may have and provide our recommendation on what we think is best for your situation. You will be well taken care of at Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons. We are confident you will be pleased with the results.
