Waxing is a cosmetic procedure for hair removal. The procedure uses hot wax to pull out body or facial hair to leave the skin smooth and hair-free. At HealthPartners Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of waxing treatment for our patients in the Twin Cities.
What Can You Expect During Waxing?
Before waxing, our team will ensure that your skin is completely dry and sweat-free. Oily, wet or sweaty skin can make it difficult for the wax to stick. Our team may apply talcum powder or use a dry cloth to wipe and soak up oils on the skin.
If your hair is too long and unruly for waxing, it may be trimmed pre-wax. The wax will also be tested to ensure it is just the right temperature to be malleable and not so hot as to burn the skin.
Once your skin is prepped, the wax will be spread on the skin. Depending on the type of wax used, it will then be either pulled out as is or with cloth strips. Finally, a soothing gel, lotion, or antibacterial ointment will be applied to the skin after wiping off any wax residue.
What You Should Know Before Undergoing Body Hair Waxing?
Waxing is a relatively easy procedure. However, keep in mind that people with sensitive skin might see some mild after-effects like redness and bumps. With time and as your body gets accustomed to waxing, these effects will become less prominent.
Avoid using wax on varicose veins, bruises or moles and on extra sensitive skin that is prone to bruising, reddening or swelling.
The length of body hair is an important factor to keep in mind before booking a waxing appointment. Hair that is too short or too long might affect the results. Ideally, hair should be at least ¼ inch long. In case your hair is too long or unruly, your cosmetologist might advise trimming before the procedure.
Waxing can be used to pull hair from anywhere on the body, including the face, legs and even bikini line. The biggest advantage of waxing over other hair removal methods like shaving and plucking is that hair is removed from the roots.
What Are Some Pre-Waxing Steps You Should Be Aware Of?
There are certain steps you can take before your waxing appointment to optimize results. A day or two before waxing, make sure to exfoliate your skin thoroughly to remove dead skin cells.
This also ensures any ingrown hairs are loosened. On the day of waxing, make sure to arrive with clean, freshly showered skin. Skin collects oil throughout the day, which makes it difficult for the wax to stick. Clean, makeup-free skin is therefore advisable before undergoing waxing.
It is advisable to avoid waxing if you have recently gotten intensive skin treatments like microdermabrasion or laser. Certain topical treatments like chemical peels, skin or hair bleaching products can also make your skin sensitive. Refrain from any such treatments for at least a week before your waxing appointment.
The results from waxing last anywhere from 3-6 weeks. Waxing is a quick treatment. You can resume normal activities immediately after
If you have undergone waxing on sensitive areas like the bikini line, avoid saunas and steam baths or exposing your intimate area to germs from public toilets. For waxing on other areas of the body, it is advisable to limit sun exposure immediately after, to wear sunscreen and avoid perfumed products on the skin. Our team may also advise other precautions like wearing loose clothes or the type of skincare to apply post-procedure. Follow your expert’s post-care instructions religiously.
