Enlarged male breasts, known as gynecomastia, is actually a quite common condition affecting 40-60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. There is usually no known cause, but a small number of cases may be due to certain drugs or medical problems.

Breast reduction in males works best if you have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the new contours. If you are obese or overweight, you may be encouraged to try exercise or weight loss first to correct the condition without surgery. If you drink alcohol excessively, smoke marijuana, or use anabolic steroids, these may cause breast enlargement in males. You will be encouraged to discontinue use to see if the condition corrects itself. Your surgeon will do an exam to determine if your enlarged breasts are due to a medical condition. You’ll be referred to an appropriate specialist if this is the case.
There may be noticeable scars from the surgery. These will fade over time. You may also have permanent pigment changes in the breast area, or slightly mismatched breasts or nipples. If you are a smoker, it may cause poor healing and wider scars. You’ll be asked to stop smoking for a length of time.
If your breast enlargement is caused by excess glandular tissue, the surgery may be done alone or in combination with liposuction. If the cause is mostly fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be used to remove the excess fat. In extreme cases, excess skin may need to be removed to allow the skin to adjust to the new breast contour. Your surgeon will make his/her recommendation based on your particular situation.
