Dr. Kalliainen has been in practice since September, 2000. She graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1991 and started a residency in General Surgery at the University of Iowa. After three years of training, she transferred to the Plastic Surgery Program at the University of Michigan. She did laboratory research in nerve and muscle healing for two years before resuming clinical training. Once she completed training in Plastic Surgery, she elected to do a one-year fellowship in Hand Surgery at the University of Virginia in the Departments of Plastic and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Her first faculty position was at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Approximately 75% of her practice dealt with hand surgery in adults and children. She was active in education of residents and medical students and did outreach programs in community hospitals, with EMTs, and with firefighters on the acute management of hand injuries. She became an instructor in Advanced Burn Life Support. She continued to do nerve research and participated in clinical research projects. Her committee work included functioning as Chairperson of the Institutional Review Board.
In July, 2004, she moved to the Twin Cities to take a job in the Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery at Regions Hospital. She is adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota and participates in the education of residents and medical students. She has continued her focus on treatment of acute and chronic problems of the hand and forearm in adults and children. She is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery and is certified in the Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand (formerly known as the CAQHS). She is a member of the Regions Hospital Ethics Committee. Nationally, she is active in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, and the Plastic Surgery Research Council. She has presented her research findings nationally and internationally and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. She enjoys travel and has participated in medical missions to India and Guatemala.
